Columbia County Fair Heritage Building
Carding, spinning, and knitting and weaving a little bit, at the fair for the week.  We had lots of helpers and also the children gave a presentation on “Processing Wool by Hand” for 4H.

Austerlitz Historical Society Blueberry Festival

Set up with spinning wheels and carders, we have volunteered here for a number of years now, demonstrating wool processing and spinning.  The children from our 4H group are all great at doing this and sharing their skills.

Hawthorne Valley Yuletide Fair
Sold beeswax candles and ornaments, very busy.  Special thanks to friends who helped mind the selling, while I went off to sing!  hooray!

Columbia County Fair Heritage Building
Again the children and I were spinning, carding wool, and showing fleeces in various stages of sheep to yarn.  This year, the children also did some weaving demonstrations.  Maybe one year we will manage to form a spinning guild and compose a fleece-to-shawl team…

I joined the children making flower crowns and we busily steamed up rhubarb juice to sell at this event, to support the historic preservation work of the Friends of St. Peter’s.

Clermont Chancellor’s Sheep and Wool Showcase
Spinning and talking to passers-by with our 4H group; Hester did some weaving demonstrations.  We now look forward to seeing certain craftspeople annually at this event.

Hawthorne Valley Yuletide Fair
A busy day in the amazing warm midwinter weather; I nearly sold out of candles and the children sold most of the ornaments they had brought.

October 17 and 18, 2015
NY Sheep and Wool Festival, Rhinebeck
Great to meet the sheep and shepherds.  We particularly liked the bearish Herdwick, and the fine long-wooled Gottland, Teeswaters, and Wensleydales.

September 2 – 7, 2015
Columbia County Fair Heritage Building
The children and I were spinning, carding wool, and showing fleeces in various stages of sheep to yarn.  This year we had a number of young spinners helping in the afternoons.  The heritage building is a wonderful place, full of local craftspeople.

Clermont Chancellor’s Sheep and Wool Showcase
We took spinning and carding and wool to this spring fair, with our 4H group.  Much enjoyed meeting the craftspeople and wooly folk.

Hawthorne Valley Community Wellness Day
12-4 pm, $5- admittance fee
This was public event, promoting a range of alternative wellness remedies and activities.  I took plant preparations, salts, and beeswax candles for sale and testing, and free samples.

Spinning and Handwork
Friends joined for handwork and spinning Wednesdays from 11.30 am to 1 pm at Mettabee Farm Barn near Harlemville, during the 4 weeks of February.

January 2015
Lea had our beautiful Shibori-style silk scarves at her shop Lea’s in Chatham.  This year we used a blocking resist technique (itajime shibori).  The scarves are dyed on the wood stove in the kitchen in two big pots: black walnut nuts/hulls in one, acorns in the other (both trees grow right here, very local!).

What a busy day of talking with many people, and singing, and dancing!  I brought my apothecary things: herbal salves, creams and salts, and beeswax candles; the children sold their beeswax ornaments and small gifts.

We were in the Heritage Building again, demonstrating spinning wool, carding, and plying.  I love this high summer week spent in the company of local craftspeople…

Austerlitz Historical Society Blueberry Festival
The children and I were carding and spinning.  We were next to Fred dePaul, sharing his skillful shearing and vast historical knowledge.  A lot of people remarked “so after he shears the wool, it comes over here to be made into yarn…”  It was great that we were able to show this process so fully.

We will be spinning wool in the Heritage Building on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 10 am until around 3 pm.  The children will also participate in 4H, and we will have entries in the wool booth.
